Are notifications a Dark Pattern?

Dark Patterns are tricks used in websites and apps that make you do things that you didn't mean to. This typically means things like buying something or signing up for something. It’s a concept in UX used to describe design choices that are intentionally deceptive. However, coding choices are also sometimes used to make you do things you don’t want to do, like force you to receive a message when you don’t want to or haven’t chosen to. While this is not strictly a ‘dark pattern’ I argue it’s a ‘grey pattern’, like a big pop up that forces you to double exit.
